The Twittersphere in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is absolutely abuzz with speculation, as it is most summers, about what’s next for their club. In between the potential takeover, of which the Bin Zayed Group claim is “close”, to Rafael Benitez’s future, there’s a lot going on.
This week, The S*n and Daily Mirror linked former Manchester United and Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, to the NUFC hot-seat. Reports claimed that Mourinho “would be open” to taking the Newcastle job – it’s said to be a job he’s always been keen on, following in the footsteps of his former boss and idol, Sir Bobby Robson.
However, this summer may not be the time for Jose to make that move. With all the uncertainty around Newcastle’s ownership, it seems as though that move would only be possible should Mike Ashley sell the club to BZG or someone else. After having communication problems and issues with funds at Manchester United, I highly doubt working with Ashley is high on Mourinho’s bucket list.
The other thing is Rafa’s future. Newcastle United fans ADORE Benitez and it’s certain that 99% of the Geordie nation are begging for their club to give Rafa a new contract before his current one expires in 20 days time. If the new owners are to come in, securing Rafa’s future will have to be priority number one. If they allow him to leave, they risk alienating the entire fan base from the very beginning of their reign. No good businessman is that silly… right?
Now, saying as though Mourinho will NOT work with Ashley and potential new owners are not at all likely to oust Benitez, Mourinho to Newcastle seems a dud. However, that’s not to say it won’t one day happen.
Mourinho has always been open with how much he likes Newcastle. Remember these quotes? “I like to go there. I like the feeling of going to Mr Robson’s home. I like that feeling. I like the stadium. I like the atmosphere. They are a good, enthusiastic crowd. I like the Geordies.”
With his connection to the city, his straight-talking manner and his love for the game, it seems like Mourinho and Newcastle are a match made in heaven. In the future, post-Rafa and post-Ashley, there is a great chance it’ll one day happen – but this summer? Not a chance.
If and when it does happen, he’ll be worshipped on Tyneside – that’s a guarantee.
