Newcastle United have smashed their long-standing transfer record for the second time in just six months as they announce the signing of striker Joelinton. The Brazilian signs for a reported £40m from German side Hoffenheim as United set their stall out for the remaining three weeks of the window.
Last week, I wrote a profile and verdict article regarding Newcastle’s newest star as paper talk began to progress. I did say that I really liked this deal from an NUFC perspective. Despite the hefty fee, I stand by it as the Brazilian becomes the latest star to wear the fabled number nine shirt on Tyneside.
It’s been reported that former manager Rafael Benitez wasn’t too keen on the deal due to the hefty price – he preferred to re-sign Salomon Rondon. New manager Steve Bruce didn’t seem to share these same reservations as he came in and immediately green-lighted the deal. Fans seem to be somewhat torn on the deal with some saying it’s a fantastic move while others are sceptical of the large pricetag.
Here’s some fan reaction on Twitter:
New Toon boss Steve Bruce was inside St James’ Park to meet Joelinton this afternoon too. Here’s what he’s had to say about his new £40million man:
“The kid’s got an exciting time ahead of him. He’s a smashing young player and we’re obviously delighted to get him. It’s been going on for a little bit now, so to get him is great for everybody.
“He’s got everything that a modern-day player wants. He’s big, strong and athletic, and of course he’s got age on his side too which is vitally important.
“He’s learned the history and wanted it (the number nine shirt), and that’s always a big shirt to fill. But in his eyes, it was ‘bring it on – it’s what I’m here for’. He’s risen to that challenge, and I’m sure he will be a big, big favourite of the supporters. He’s got an incredible work-rate about him, he’s got a really good humility about him, and all the attributes a top striker needs.”
Meanwhile, the striker himself has given his first interview as a Newcastle player. He revealed he’s been a fan of Premier League football since he was young and how the fans have already shown him a lot of love.
“I’m really happy to be here,” said Joelinton. “I know it’s a large investment that the club has made in me, and that comes with a huge responsibility. I’m highly motivated and hope to give back on the pitch.”
“When it came out in the press, the fans haven’t stopped writing to me. This affection made me really happy and I hope to give back to them on the pitch. I hope to bring a lot of joy to the fans.”
