Danny Rose hopes Newcastle spell can ‘put him in the window’ for England

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live today, Newcastle loanee Danny Rose spoke of his desire to get back into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the England squad. Amongst other things, he told BBC that he hopes he can “put myself back in the window” during his six-month spell at Newcastle.

“I’ve been given a chance to play week in and week out,” said Rose. “I want to play football again – with the Euros in the summer, I want to put myself in window.

“If I go to Newcastle and do well they may think that’s what’s expected of me. But if I don’t do well then they might think Tottenham were right to let me go. I have a lot riding on this, but I’m confident in my ability and I know I will do well.”

Of the six games played by England so far this year, Rose has appeared in just two of them and faces stiff competition for his place.

The starting left-back for England this summer is almost nailed on to be Leicester City star Ben Chilwell, but Rose will be hopeful he can at least get the job as his deputy. Even then, he has competition from Manchester United’s two left-backs, Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.

Other options Gareth Southgate could look to include Bournemouth’s Adam Smith, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand, Everton’s Fabian Delph who has deputised there before and West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell.

Of that bunch, they have a combined England experience of 42 caps – Ryan Bertrand and Fabian Delph making up 39 of them. Can any of them do a better job than Danny Rose would? I’m not so sure…

During his interview, Rose spoke of the motivations behind his move to Newcastle in January – telling Radio 5 Live of his frustrations at being left out of Jose Mourinho’s plans at Tottenham.

“I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline,” said Rose. I did want to play for him.”

The 29-year-old added: “I knew after a month I was never going to play. It was difficult going out to train knowing I wasn’t going to play. It’s not worked out, but full respect to him and what he’s doing at the club.

He took over with the club 12 points adrift of Chelsea and now it’s four. I have to be honest, I thought I would continue playing.”

Either way it works out, Newcastle fans are happy to have him on Tyneside, Tottenham fans are happy he’s not with them anymore and Danny is happy he gets the chance to play.

Now he just needs to kick on for the rest of the season in the north east and get himself into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the summer. He is, talent-wise at least, the second best left-back at Southgate’s disposal in my opinion – he just needs to prove his attitude is in the right place and he’ll be on that plane.
